Adult Education

“There is a reason Jesus blessed the children and taught the adults. Those adults were supposed to teach the children.” (Fargo Forum, Sunday, August 15, 2004)

“Adults are the keys to a healthy educational ministry. The primary evangelical task of the church is to pass on faith in Jesus Christ.”

“We are unintentionally working against the faith formation of children and youth by not edifying and equipping parents (and other adults in the congregation) to be active participants in the faith lives of their children.”

“The best teaching tool we have as parents is our example.” (Hand in Hand, Growing Spiritually With Our Children by Sue Downing)

Instruction becomes possible only when the need for learning is acknowledged as a lifelong commitment to tending a household of faith. “Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.”

In light of the importance of the above quotes, we at Dilworth Lutheran Church value education for all ages and are in the process, at the printing of this booklet, of putting together a program of Adult Education. We are hoping to be able to offer short term commitment classes, and on-going classes on many different and varied topics. We encourage all adults to try at least one a year. Watch the bulletin for the many offerings. We also value your ideas. Please give them to Pam Buschette-Cottrell, chair of the Adult Education Task Force.

Home Based Ministry

"Teaching the Faith is a far too important task to be left to the church." Dr Dick Hardel,Youth&Family Institute.

"Most certainly fathers and mothers are apostles, bishops and priests to their children, for it is they who make them acquainted with the gospel." Dr. Martin Luther in his treatise on The Estate of Marriage.

"Faith is nurtured through caring and trusted relationships." Dr. David Anderson, Youth and Family Institute.

“Faith and Values are taught in the home, either intentionally or unintentionally." Pastor Mark Asleson

No matter how you state it, faith is formed through personal, trusted relationships and most often those personal, trusted relationships are rooted in and through the home, through parents, grandparents, and extended family.

As a Christian Community is it our goal through education to provide opportunities for parents and other adults, as well as children, to grow in their faith. Some of these opportunities will be found in the Milestones Ministry Classes that begin with the Baptismal Anniversary for the youngest of our children and their homes and continues through the Bible Survey Course offered not only to 8th Graders and their families but everyone who is interested in learning and growing. 7th and 9th graders are paired with adult mentors who are can either be family members or congregational members.

We believe that as a Christian Congregation it is vital to support and educate adults as well as children in ways to better help all of them to be intentional in the faith and values they pass on in their homes.

May the work that we do here bless not only the homes of our congregation but the communities in which they live as well.

Thesis: Milestones are particular occasions for individuals to grow in their life of faith with the support of home and congregation. The Christian home is and must be the place where the faith in nurtured and passed on. The congregation’s goal, as a community of faith, is to equip and support the Christian home in the task of nurturing the faith of the whole household and in turn the congregation.

The Vision: To strengthen the faith life of the congregation by strengthening the faith life of our homes.

Baptism: Christian baptism is the starting point of a life or a journey lived in relationship with God through Christ. In baptism we declare that faith is a gift. We are called to be good and faithful stewards of this gift. We are brought to the font by our parents and sponsors. Parents and sponsors promise to teach and nurture the faith in us. The congregation promises to support the home in the teaching and nurturing of the faith. The congregation and the home work in partnership to keep up in the faith of Jesus Christ.

How do we mark FaithLife Milestones?

• WE COME TOGETHER TO LEARN AND CELEBRATE

• WE NAME THE MILESTONE

• WE OFFER A BLESSING AND GIVE A MEMENTO

• WE GIVE TOOLS THAT SUPPORT/UPLIFT THE MILESTONE

SOME MILESTONES ON THE FAITHLIFE JOURNEY

Confirmation Program

“Faith is caught, not taught!” “Faith is encouraged, not forced!” Religious education and training is a life-long process. It begins at home with parents who simply practice the faith. It is supported through participation in a community of faith. It is nurtured in the home, through participation in the community at faith at church, and through service to the world.

Goals of confirmation (which is a reaffirming of our baptism) are:

• Discipleship – people who resemble disciples of Jesus in their lifestyle, beliefs, and values.

• Knowing and following Christ – we are uninterested in our youth just knowing more “about” Christ; we want them to know and follow Christ. Confirmation must be more than the elementary mastery of a few facts about Jesus, about church history, about the Bible, and so on. Confirmation is giving people the equipment they need now to be disciples.

• Equipping all of us to continue our faith journey and to teach others. It is the responsibility of all the believers – it takes a whole congregation to raise a child. We all promise to support and nurture each child that is baptized in our worship services.

Expectation for Parents:

*To worship with your confirmand, complete with them the worship discussion guides, and to talk with them about their activities at church and with their mentors.

*To pray with and for your confirmand, their teachers, and yourself.

*To let Pastor and our Diaconal Minister know if there are any problems, such as illness, learning difficulties, curriculum oncerns or other concerns with regard to your son/daughter that should be known.

*To actively seek growth in your own faith.

Other Information:

Bible Camp - We would like to see students to attend at least one week of Bible Camp between the 6th and 9th grades. Scholarships are available. (this is NOT a requirement).

Mentor Program - In the 7th and 9th Grade year, each Confirmand, together with the approval of their parent(s), is asked to select a “Faith Mentor”. A Faith Mentor is someone they are willing to talk to about faith, values, and life, someone who models what they are being asked to teach and share. The mentors can be grandparents, aunt or uncles, good friends, or other congregational members. The faith mentor are asked to meet with their confirmand a minimum of 7 times beginning in December until May.

Senior Confirmation Faith Papers - Those preparing to be Confirmed are asked to complete a “Faith Paper” that is available at the church office. This paper is to be completed by the Confirmand and shared with parent(s) and others of the Confirmand’s choosing. Beginning in September of each year those being Confirmed are to schedule an interview with the pastor and our Diaconal Minister. Parent(s) and Confirmand are invited to attend this interview.

The Rite of Confirmation - The Confirmation Service is held on Reformation Sunday (last Sunday in October) and the Confirmation Banquet and pictures are the week before..

Confirmation Banquet - 9th Graders and Parent(s) serve, and clean up for the 10th Grade.

Updated Information - is available on either our web-site at www.dilworthlutheran.org or through the office at 287-2628.

Weather and Special Closings: Confirmation is scheduled to work with the local school schedules. On those days when there is no school or if school has been canceled and buses are not running, there will be no confirmation. This also means, that if buses are sent home early, there will be no Wednesday night classes as well.
